How to be a Fashionista on a Budget
This summer I have been focusing more on my Instagram. It is such a great platform for me to be able to quickly share my outfits and interact with you guys! But sometimes I don't want to talk your ears off with a super long caption and so I don't end up explaining everything behind an outfit.
Now that I'm on my blog, I'm ready to expose myself! The secret is out: I never buy anything full price!
Let me explain: I love clothes, accessories, and just fashion in general that I need to put myself on a budget, otherwise I'd go broke. Because of this, I am always on the hunt for sales, shop at discount stores, use shopping apps, and coupons.
On this post I am going to break down a few of my Instagram posts and explain how I got most of my pieces on sale or at a discounted price!
This outfit is a lot more affordable than it seems! I had been eyeing these Steve Madden platform espadrilles all spring because I knew I NEEDED them for the summer. When I looked at these shoes online, I had sticker shock. There was no way I was going to spend $59.99 on them, so I had to get creative. My moment to snag these shoes came when I got a coupon in the mail for being a DSW VIP member. The coupon gave me $20 off a purchase of $40 or more, so I was able to snag these babies for only $39.99!! A steal, if I do say so myself.
I don't usually shop at DSW, but I did because of the coupon. It would have cost so much more if I bought them on the Steve Madden website, so my first tip is to use rewards programs!
The other part of this outfit is this super cute striped dress! Where do you think I got it from? Some place expensive right? WRONG! It's from Target! My second tip is to shop at discount stores, like Target, to find great basics and pieces that look more expensive than they are! I love shopping at Target and some of my favorite things to buy there currently are from the Who What Wear line (like this dress), SugarFix by Bauble Bar earrings (that I talked about in this post ), and bathing suits because you can buy tops and bottoms separately.
This outfit also looks a lot more expensive than it was! Next next tip is to go straight to the clearance rack! If you start your shopping at the clearance rack, you are sure to find some great deals and you are less likely to splurge on higher priced items (at least this is how my brain works). If I can find a cute top on clearance for $5, I am not going to buy a full priced one for $20. I did just that when I bought the top I'm wearing in this picture! First of all I shopped at a discount store, TJ Maxx, and walked right in to the clearance rack. I snagged this top for only $5 and I have definitely gotten my use out of it. Similar one linked here! :)
As soon as I saw this skirt on the J. Crew website, I knew I needed it in my wardrobe. But for almost $70?? No, no. My next tip is when you have to have something keep checking the store's website for sales. Since I did just that, I was able to snag this skirt for less than the retail price! I wear it so much during the summer and it was such a good buy!
The earrings I am wearing in this picture are from one of my favorite stores, Nordstrom Rack! I think that Nordstrom Rack is one of the best discount stores because it has awesome well known brands for sooooo much less money than regular Nordstrom. Some of the brands I like to hunt for at Nordstrom Rack are Steve Madden, Topshop, and Bauble Bar! These earrings originally retailed for $36 (ridiculous) and I got them for $19! I love that they are white, go with everything, and dress up any outfit!
I am continuing the theme of shopping at discount stores with this outfit! My top is from Forever 21 (similar one linked here ) and my shorts and sandals are from J. Crew Factory! I waited for these shorts to go on sale and once they were I bought them through an app called Ebates. Ebates is basically an app where if you shop through the app, you get cash back. All different online stores have different percentages of cash back. When I bought these shorts through it, I ended up getting 60 cents back. It doesn't sound like much, but if you make all of your online purchases through Ebates it is totally worth it! At the end of the period I ended up getting a check for $11 in cash back that I can deposit right into my bank account! If you would like to try it out my referral code is linked here!
Some things are worth the chase! I knew that I wanted a circle shaped straw bag to use this summer because I had been seeing them everywhere! When I began my chase I noticed that bags like this went for around $100. No way was I spending that much money on a trendy and seasonal item! I searched high and low both online and in store until I found this one for half the price! I would rather put in extra effort to find something for less, than to cough up a big chunk of change for something that is over priced!
My last tip on how to be a fashionista on a budget is if you think that you can make something yourself, do it! Majority of the time if you can make something yourself you can save so much money! In this Instagram picture I made my tassel earrings (step by step directions in this post) and a bunch of others for under $10! You can't buy a pair of tassel earrings for under $10 at any store, so by making them you can save so much money! Also, if you make tassel earrings, or any expensive fashion piece for that matter, you can customize it to be exactly what you want. With earrings you can pick the colors you want, add beads, etc!
Alright I think that's everything! What tips are you going to try out for yourself? Do you have any tips I missed that you can share with me? Leave me a comment below and thanks for reading!
